Terms & Conditions

These Terms & Conditions apply to purchases from the 186 Light Ltd website. Please read them before placing an order.

1. About 186 Light Ltd

186 Light Ltd is an e-commerce retailer of decorative and architectural lighting and related products. 186 Light Ltd does not operate a public showroom, retail shop, customer collection point or stockholding warehouse.

Registered office: 3rd Floor, 86–90 Paul Street, London, England, United Kingdom, EC2A 4NE. This address is for administration and statutory correspondence only. It is not a returns address and returned goods must not be sent there.

Telephone: 020 4569 1505. Company number: 16272236. Registered in England and Wales.

2. Consumer and Business Customers

A Consumer is an individual purchasing wholly or mainly for purposes outside their trade, business, craft or profession. A Business Customer is anyone purchasing wholly or mainly for business purposes. Some legal rights in these Terms apply only to Consumers.

Nothing in these Terms excludes or restricts any right or remedy that cannot lawfully be excluded or restricted.

3. No-stock, supplier-direct model

To keep operating costs and prices competitive, 186 Light Ltd does not hold product stock. Products are sourced from the relevant supplier or manufacturer after an order is accepted and may be shipped directly from that supplier or manufacturer to the customer.

Any availability or lead-time information therefore relates to supplier or manufacturer availability rather than goods physically held by 186 Light Ltd. Lead times are estimates unless 186 Light Ltd expressly agrees a fixed delivery date in writing.

4. Product information and specifications

186 Light Ltd takes reasonable care to present descriptions, dimensions, finishes, colours, images and technical data accurately. Manufacturers may alter specifications, packaging or minor product details without notice. Screen settings, photography, natural materials and manufacturing tolerances can also cause variations in appearance.

Before ordering, customers should check dimensions, finish, light source, dimming method, electrical requirements, IP rating, mounting conditions and compatibility with the intended installation. Where any specification is critical, contact 186 Light Ltd before ordering.

5. Availability and lead times

All products are subject to supplier or manufacturer availability. After an order is submitted, 186 Light Ltd may verify current availability and lead time. Where practicable, 186 Light Ltd will provide or confirm an estimated lead time within 3 working days.

If a product is unavailable, discontinued or subject to a materially different lead time, 186 Light Ltd will contact the customer with the available options. Where the customer is legally entitled to cancel or 186 Light Ltd cannot fulfil the order, sums due for refund will be returned in accordance with applicable law.

6. Orders and contract formation

By submitting an order, the customer makes an offer to purchase the selected goods on these Terms. An automated acknowledgement or payment receipt confirms receipt of the order but does not necessarily mean that 186 Light Ltd has accepted it.

A binding sales contract is formed when 186 Light Ltd sends an Order Confirmation expressly accepting the order, unless the checkout clearly states a different point of acceptance. Before acceptance, 186 Light Ltd may decline an order because of unavailability, an obvious pricing error, payment failure, delivery restrictions, suspected fraud or another legitimate reason.

7. Prices, VAT and payment

The price payable is the price shown at checkout, subject to correction of obvious errors. Applicable taxes and delivery charges will be shown before the customer submits the order. Payment must be made using a method offered at checkout.

If an obvious pricing or system error is identified before the order is accepted, 186 Light Ltd may reject the order and refund any payment already taken. If a contract has already been formed, any correction will be dealt with in accordance with applicable law.

8. Discount codes, sales and promotions

Promotional codes and sale offers are subject to the conditions stated with the promotion. Unless stated otherwise, only one code may be used per order, codes cannot be combined, and offers apply only to participating products or brands.

Codes must be applied before the order is submitted. A later price reduction does not create an entitlement to repayment of the difference on an earlier purchase unless required by law or expressly offered by 186 Light Ltd. Any refund will reflect the price actually paid after discount.

9. Consumer right to cancel an online purchase

A Consumer purchasing standard goods online normally has the right to cancel without giving a reason. The cancellation period starts when the contract is formed and normally ends 14 days after the day on which the Consumer, or a person nominated by the Consumer other than the carrier, receives the goods. Different timing rules can apply where one order is delivered in separate consignments.

The Consumer must tell 186 Light Ltd clearly that they wish to cancel within the applicable cancellation period. After cancellation, the goods must be sent back without undue delay and no later than 14 days after the Consumer tells 186 Light Ltd of the cancellation, unless 186 Light Ltd has agreed to collect them.

10. Return Authorisation – mandatory before physically sending goods

Do not send goods to Paul Street. The registered office at 3rd Floor, 86–90 Paul Street is not a returns facility and cannot accept customer returns.

Before physically sending any product back, the customer must email 186 Light Ltd and obtain written Return Authorisation together with the correct return instructions. The authorised return destination will normally be the relevant manufacturer, supplier or authorised service facility and can differ from order to order.

Goods sent to 186 Light Ltd, the registered office, or any address other than the return address stated in the written Return Authorisation may be refused and returned to the sender. Where permitted by law, the sender will be responsible for any avoidable carriage or handling cost caused by ignoring the return instructions.

For a Consumer exercising a statutory cancellation or faulty-goods remedy, the Return Authorisation process is an administrative and logistics requirement. It does not remove a statutory right that has been validly exercised, and 186 Light Ltd will not unreasonably withhold or delay return instructions where a statutory right applies.

11. Manufacturer inspection and assessment

Because 186 Light Ltd does not hold stock or operate a technical returns centre, returned products may be sent directly to the relevant manufacturer, supplier or authorised service facility for inspection. The manufacturer or supplier may provide the technical assessment used to establish the cause of a reported fault, damage, installation issue or product condition.

The manufacturer or supplier does not replace 186 Light Ltd as the contracting retailer. Where UK consumer law gives the customer a remedy against the retailer, 186 Light Ltd remains responsible for providing that remedy. A manufacturer assessment may inform the decision on whether a product is faulty, misused, incorrectly installed or otherwise outside a warranty, but it does not override rights that cannot legally be excluded.

12. Change-of-mind returns: condition and costs

For a Consumer cancellation of standard goods, the Consumer is responsible for the direct cost of returning the goods unless 186 Light Ltd has agreed otherwise or the law requires 186 Light Ltd to bear that cost.

A Consumer may handle goods only as reasonably necessary to establish their nature, characteristics and functioning, broadly as they could in a shop. Where handling goes beyond this and causes a reduction in value, 186 Light Ltd may make a deduction from the refund to the extent permitted by law.

Customers should keep and use the original manufacturer packaging wherever reasonably possible because specialist lighting is vulnerable to transit damage. The absence of original packaging does not by itself remove a statutory cancellation right, but poor repacking or avoidable damage may reduce the refund where the law permits.

13. Made-to-order, bespoke and personalised products

The statutory change-of-mind cancellation right does not apply where a legal exemption applies, including goods made to the Consumer’s specifications or clearly personalised goods. A product is not treated as bespoke merely because 186 Light Ltd orders it from a supplier after the customer places the order.

Where a product is genuinely customised or specially manufactured so that the legal exception applies, this will be made clear before the order is submitted. Faulty or misdescribed bespoke goods remain subject to applicable statutory rights.

14. Refunds after Consumer cancellation

Where a Consumer validly cancels a standard online purchase, 186 Light Ltd will refund the price paid and the cost of the least expensive standard outbound delivery option offered for the order. Any additional amount paid for premium, timed or enhanced delivery is not refundable merely because the Consumer changes their mind.

Where 186 Light Ltd has not offered to collect the goods, the refund will be made without undue delay and no later than 14 days after 186 Light Ltd or the authorised return recipient receives the goods back, or, if earlier, after the Consumer provides satisfactory evidence that the goods were sent to the authorised return address. Refunds are normally made using the original payment method unless otherwise agreed.

15. Faulty, damaged, incorrect or misdescribed goods

Consumers are entitled to goods that are of satisfactory quality, fit for purpose where applicable and as described. Nothing in these Terms restricts those statutory rights.

Please inspect goods and packaging as soon as reasonably possible after delivery. Visible transit damage, shortages or incorrect items should be reported promptly. Reporting within 48 hours greatly assists carrier and supplier claims, but failure to report within 48 hours does not remove a Consumer’s statutory rights.

186 Light Ltd may request photographs, video, packaging, serial numbers, installation information or an electrician’s report where technically relevant, and may arrange manufacturer or supplier inspection. If a Consumer has a legal right to reject faulty goods, 186 Light Ltd will bear reasonable return costs as required by law. Depending on the circumstances, statutory remedies may include rejection and refund, repair, replacement or price reduction.

16. Installation and compatibility

Lighting products must be installed and tested by a suitably competent person in accordance with manufacturer instructions and applicable electrical and building requirements. Where a product requires a particular driver, dimmer, control protocol, lamp, transformer or home-automation interface, the customer and installer must confirm compatibility before installation unless 186 Light Ltd has expressly undertaken a complete system design in writing.

186 Light Ltd is not responsible for faults caused by incorrect installation, incompatible controls, unauthorised modification, misuse, environmental conditions outside the stated product rating or failure to follow the manufacturer’s instructions, subject always to rights and liabilities that cannot lawfully be excluded.

17. Do not book installers before receipt and inspection

Customers should not commit to electricians, access equipment, decorators or other third-party services for a fixed installation date until the goods have arrived and have been checked. Supplier and carrier delays can occur. Subject to liability that cannot legally be excluded, 186 Light Ltd is not responsible for avoidable third-party costs caused by a customer booking work before receipt and inspection of the goods.

18. Manufacturer guarantees

Products may include a manufacturer guarantee. Duration and conditions vary by brand and product. A manufacturer guarantee is additional to, and does not replace, statutory rights available to Consumers against 186 Light Ltd as retailer.

19. Business and trade customers

Business Customers do not have the statutory Consumer change-of-mind cancellation right. Once a Business Customer order has been accepted and committed to a supplier or manufacturer, cancellation or return of conforming goods requires the written agreement of 186 Light Ltd and may be subject to supplier cancellation charges, restocking charges, return carriage and other reasonable costs.

Business Customers must inspect deliveries promptly and notify 186 Light Ltd of shortages, transit damage or incorrect goods as soon as reasonably practicable. Nothing in these Terms excludes liability that cannot lawfully be excluded.

20. Liability

186 Light Ltd does not exclude or limit liability where doing so would be unlawful, including liability for death or personal injury caused by negligence, fraud or fraudulent misrepresentation, or Consumer rights that cannot be excluded.

For Consumers, 186 Light Ltd is responsible for losses that are a foreseeable result of its breach of contract or failure to use reasonable care and skill. It is not responsible for losses that were not reasonably foreseeable or for business losses suffered by a Consumer using goods principally for commercial purposes.

For Business Customers, subject to liabilities that cannot lawfully be excluded and any separately agreed trade terms, neither party is liable for indirect or consequential loss, loss of profit, loss of business, loss of opportunity or loss of anticipated savings. The aggregate liability of 186 Light Ltd arising from a particular Business Customer order will not exceed the amount paid for the goods giving rise to the claim, to the extent such limitation is lawful and reasonable.

21. Website content and intellectual property

Original 186 Light Ltd website text, branding, layout and other original content are protected by applicable intellectual property law. Manufacturer names, trade marks, product designs, photographs and technical materials remain the property of their respective rights holders and are used under permission, licence or another lawful basis.

Users must not reproduce, republish, systematically extract, scrape or commercially exploit website content without permission except where allowed by law. Suspected infringement can be reported to 186 Light Ltd using the website contact channel or by telephone on 020 4569 1505.

22. Website security and acceptable use

Users must not attempt unauthorised access, interfere with website security, introduce malicious code, impersonate another person, use automated systems in a way that places an unreasonable load on the website, or use the website for fraudulent or unlawful activity. 186 Light Ltd may restrict access where reasonably necessary to protect customers, suppliers, systems or legal rights.

23. Privacy and cookies

Personal information is handled in accordance with the Privacy Policy and Cookie Policy published on the 186 Light Ltd website. Those policies should be read alongside these Terms.

24. Events outside reasonable control

186 Light Ltd is not responsible for delay or failure caused by events outside its reasonable control, including supplier disruption, manufacturer delays, carrier disruption, industrial action, severe weather, transport interruption, customs or import delays, governmental action, cyber incidents or utility failures. This clause does not remove any mandatory Consumer right, including rights relating to late delivery.

25. Changes to these Terms

186 Light Ltd may update these Terms from time to time. The terms applying to an order are those made available when the contract is formed, unless a later change is expressly agreed or required by law.

26. Complaints and contact

For questions, complaints or claims, contact 186 Light Ltd through the website customer-service channel or telephone 020 4569 1505. Please provide the order number, product details and a clear description of the issue.

27. Governing law and courts

These Terms and contracts with 186 Light Ltd are governed by the laws of England and Wales. A Consumer retains any mandatory rights and access to courts that apply in the part of the United Kingdom in which they live. Business Customers agree, subject to any mandatory rule, to the exclusive jurisdiction of the courts of England and Wales.

28. Model cancellation wording

A Consumer may use the following wording, although any clear statement communicating the decision to cancel is sufficient:
